Institute of International Education

The Institute has a long history of promoting educational exchange between the peoples of China and the United States. The first IIE study abroad opportunity for Americans in Asia was the American-Chinese Student Exchange in 1936 and later, during World War II, the Institute helped to secure aid for Chinese students in the U.S. unable to return home. Since that time, IIE’s programs in Asia have grown into multilateral programs that include educational and cultural exchanges, training and internship programs, workshops and seminars, as well as study tours and site visits. IIE’s office in Hong Kong was established in 1967 and, in 2001, the Institute opened an office in Beijing. Programs currently managed from the Beijing office include the Fulbright Program (US Researchers and Chinese FLTA, MA and Ph.D. subprograms), China Medical Board Fellowships, and the China Environmental Stewardship Awards. IIE/Beijing also hosts the Regional Educational Advising Coordinator, who works closely with EducationUSA staff at the US Embassies and consulates in the region to promote US higher education, and an Outreach Officer for NYU-Abu Dhabi.
